Day Cruise under Tacoma Narrows Bridge with friends on board -- February 2016

This was just a little day cruise with friends on board, just because the weather was perfect.  We cruised out around Point Defiance, then down under the two Tacoma Narrows Bridges, then back along the Salmon Beach housing area, and back to Pied Piper's boathouse home in Tacoma Yacht Club.  A perfect day.

Baby Geese -- March, 2016

I had spent part of the day on the boat at the dock doing a bit of maintenance.  When I drove out of the parking lot, this family of Geese were walking along beside the roadway .. five baby Geese at the edge of the road, one baby Goose up on the shoulder, and momma or poppa Goose urging them on.

Lake Union, Seattle, cruise on Astelle -- May, 2016

Doug & Nina, owners of the 40-foot 1942 J.J. Astell vessel "Astelle" were so gracious to extend an invitation to me and to a fellow who had contacted me from New Zealand.  Ian (the New Zealand fellow) is a member of the Mahurangi Cruising Club, an organization of classic wood boats both sail and power, and was up here visiting a cousin of his.  We had a fine day out on the lakes in Seattle, rafted up with other CYA boats on Lake Union for lunch on board Astelle, and enjoyed Ian's company thoroughly.  When Doug let Ian skipper the boat through the Montlake Cut, it was obvious that Ian knew his way around an old wood boat.

Haul-out for annual spring maintenance -- June, 2016

This was the usual, annual haul-out of Pied Piper to change zincs, check the props and shafts and rudders, check the thru-hulls, touch up the bottom paint, and various other chores that can be done only with the boat out of the water.  Photos below show how the boat is hauled out of the water, how it is parked and blocked on land, some of the items that needed attention and the work in progress and the finished work, then the trip on the Travel-Lift back into the water.  It seems to me that the boat breathes a huge sigh of relief when she touches water again, but maybe that's just me heaving that huge sigh.  I like getting that work done (all done by me), and it's a very happy moment when the boat is placed safely back into the water.

Classic Yacht Association, Bell Harbor Marina Classic Show -- June, 2016

This was the 20th year in a row for this event .. the largest gathering of CYA vessels in the world.  About 54 classic wood cruising power boats attended and opened their boats to boarding and viewing by the public.  We had great weather which resulted in about 1,500 people coming to visit over this free-to-the-public two-day weekend.  I was, again, the Dockmaster for the event and somehow squeezed those 54 boats into a marina that oridnarily holds 36 boats.  The huge ferris wheel on the Seattle waterfront was lit up with rainbow colors this year in honor of Seattle Gay Pride events.  We were proud too .. of our boats and of each other and everyone who came to enjoy the weekend.  Eventually, Pied Piper headed home to prepare for her next adventure.  A short video taken while the Pied Piper was cruising from Tacoma to Seattle to attend this event is here: https://youtu.be/-tlzwIwVEuM.
